Special Weather Statement issued March 19 at 3:17AM CDT by NWS Paducah KY

Very cold and dry surface high pressure have allowed temperatures to drop into the middle 20s throughout the Quad State early this morning. Some more sheltered areas could even drop into the lower 20s. Although the growing season has not officially started, tender vegetation could be impacted by these cold temperatures. Southwest winds will increase significantly later this morning, with gusts of 25 to 35 mph forecast in the afternoon. Along with relative humidity values falling into the 20 to 30 percent range, these gusty winds will create an elevated fire danger throughout the Quad State. If you are planning outdoor burning today, use extra caution and have fire suppression equipment ready.

A combination of dry vegetation, relative humidity lowering into the 20 to 30 percent range, and winds gusting between 20 to 30 mph will increase the danger of fire start and spread today. Please exercise caution if handling open flames or equipment that creates sparks. Dispose of cigarette buttes, matches, and other flammable materials in appropriate containers. Keep vehicles off of dry grass and obey local burn bans. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Kentucky law prohibits burning in the spring from 6AM to 6PM...February 15th through April 30th. Overnight burning is highly discouraged at this time due to the risk of holdover embers heading into today.

Special Weather Statement

Special Weather Statement issued March 19 at 4:05AM EDT by NWS Louisville KY

Below freezing temperatures around the low and mid 20s are expected this morning. Although the growing season has not officially started yet, per coordination with state agricultural partners, early blooming vegetation will likely be harmed or killed by this hard freeze. Gusty southwest winds between 25 to 35 mph with isolated gusts up to 40 mph are expected today, mainly from late morning through the early evening. Use caution when driving or operating a high profile vehicle and secure outdoor objects. In addition to the strong and gusty winds, the airmass will be very dry resulting in low relative humidity. The combination of these windy conditions and dry air will result in elevated fire danger today, and possibly again tomorrow. Outdoor burning is not recommended as any fire could grow out of control rather quickly.
