A blast of cold air will send temperatures to well below freezing at most locations tonight. With forecast lows in the low to mid 20s for the valleys and mid to upper 20s on the ridges, any freshly budding or blossoming vegetation could be damaged or killed. Now is the time to prepare for this cold snap. An enhanced risk of wildfires will occur on Tuesday, as relative humidity lowers to near or below 20 percent, along with southwest wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph in place. Locations near I-64 could see localized gusts above 30 mph in the afternoon. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn Tuesday. Use caution when burning as fires may get out of hand quickly in these conditions.

Very cold and dry surface high pressure will allow temperatures to drop into the middle and upper 20s throughout the Quad State tonight. Some more sheltered areas could even drop into the lower 20s. Although the growing season has not officially started, tender vegetation could be impacted by these cold temperatures. Please take necessary actions to protect any tender vegetation tonight. Southwest winds will increase significantly Tuesday morning, with gusts of 25 to 40 mph forecast in the afternoon. Along with relative humidity values falling into the 25 to 30 percent range, these gusty winds will create an elevated fire danger throughout the Quad State. Special Weather Statement

Special Weather Statement issued March 18 at 3:14PM EDT by NWS Louisville KY

Another cold night is expected as temperatures drop off into the 25 to 30 degree range for most. Although the growing season has not officially began, per coordination with state ag partners, early blooming vegetation will likely be harmed or killed by this hard freeze. Gusty southwest winds between 20 and 30 mph with occasional gusts between 30 and 40 mph are expected on Tuesday, mainly from late morning through the early evening. Use caution if planning to be outdoors or driving a high profile vehicle. In addition to the strong and gusty winds, the airmass will be very dry resulting in low relative humidity. The combination of these breezy conditions and dry air will result in increased fire danger Tuesday, and possibly again into Wednesday. Outdoor burning is not recommended as any fire could grow out of control under these conditions.

Special Weather Statement

Special Weather Statement issued March 18 at 1:35PM EDT by NWS Charleston WV

A combination of dry vegetation, relative humidity lowering into the 20 to 30 percent range, and winds gusting to around 20 to 30 mph will result in increased danger of fire spread Tuesday. Please exercise caution if handling open flames or equipment that creates sparks. Dispose of cigarette buttes, matches, and other flammable materials in appropriate containers. Keep vehicles off of dry grass and obey local burn bans. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Kentucky law prohibits burning in the spring from 6AM to 6PM...February 15th through April 30th. Overnight burning is highly discouraged at this time due to the risk of holdover embers heading into Tuesday.
