Current National Weather
Stormy Weather in the Midwest
We're in for a stormy ride in the Midwest over the next couple of days, as a slow-moving cold front will bring widespread thunderstorms. These storms could lead to flash flooding and severe weather, so stay prepared! On Friday, expect storms from the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes areas down to the Missouri Valley. The abundant moisture and leftover energy from previous storms will contribute to repeated rounds of heavy rain. This could lead to flash flooding, and there's a chance of severe weather, including damaging winds and possible tornadoes. The front will continue moving southeast into Saturday, bringing stormy weather to the Great Lakes and Lower Ohio Valleys. Be prepared for scattered flash floods and some severe weather, especially in the Lower Great Lakes.
Storms and Flooding Threat in the Plains
The Southern Plains are also on watch for storms. On Friday, the central Plains and southern High Plains will face stormy conditions. The risk of flash flooding will be present in these areas. Then, on Saturday, more storms are expected with heavy rain across the Southern Plains, particularly in northern and central Texas. Flash flooding is a concern here, too, with scattered thunderstorms expected in the eastern U.S., including the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.
Heat Building in the West
Out west, we're seeing rising temperatures with an upper-level ridge overhead. Expect highs in the 90s to low 100s, and even reaching the low 110s in the Desert Southwest. The hottest areas on Friday will be in New Mexico. By Saturday, central California and the western Great Basin will be the focus of extreme heat, posing a major heat risk. In the eastern U.S., likewise, we'll see hot temperatures and muggy conditions, especially in the Southeast and Interior Northeast on Saturday, with highs in the 90s. Meanwhile, the Plains and Midwest will enjoy cooler, more comfortable weather due to the passing cold front.
