Across the Great Plains and into the eastern U.S., expect temperatures to soar well above average.
Stormy Weather in the Plains
On Thursday, March 5th, severe thunderstorms are expected to roll across portions of western Texas into southern Kansas. As the day progresses, these storms will shift towards the Midwest by Friday, bringing the possibility of heavy rain and flash floods. Thunderstorms will develop ahead of a dryline—a boundary separating moist air from dry air—over Texas and Oklahoma. Be cautious of these storms as they could be severe! By Friday, strong winds and low humidity will also increase wildfire risks across eastern New Mexico and parts of western Texas.
Wintry Mix in the Rockies and New England
Starting Thursday, snow will spread from the Northwest into the northern and central Rockies, with potential accumulations of 6 to 12 inches in higher elevations. This snow is due to colder air on the cool side of the front. In central New England, a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected Thursday evening into Friday morning, as a low-pressure system tracks south of the area. This system will bring freezing rain, especially in higher terrains from interior New York to Massachusetts with ice accumulations between 0.10 to 0.25 inches possible.
Warm Spell in the Plains and Eastern U.S.
A warm front will lift, bringing spring-like warmth across the Great Plains and into much of the eastern U.S. through Friday. Areas like Nebraska and South Dakota will see temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above average. Another round of severe storms could hit on Friday from the southern/central Plains into the Midwest. Cooler Weather Persists in New England
While the East warms up, New England remains cooler due to a stationary front and a secondary cold front moving through. By Friday, precipitation will end, but temperatures will hold in the 30s for much of the region.
