Updated Mon Sep 7th 2026, 4:43am PDT

We've got a wild start to the week with storms and heat affecting different parts of the country. Thunderstorms, some severe, will hit the Northern Rockies and Northern Plains today, leading to possible heavy rain in Northwestern Montana. Meanwhile, the central U.S. will experience a heat wave, with oppressive temperatures persisting. Scattered storms will linger in the Southeast, while cooler air brings a taste of fall to the East Coast and the West feels a cool down.

Big Storms in Northern Rockies and Plains

Today, a strong low-pressure system is bringing unsettled weather to the Northern Rockies and Northern Plains. Expect a mix of strong to severe thunderstorms, with a heavy rain threat in Northwestern Montana. By tomorrow, these storms will move into the North-Central Plains and gradually reach the Upper Midwest by Wednesday. The potential for excessive rainfall is highlighted in Iowa from Tuesday to early Wednesday, so keep umbrellas handy!

Heat Stays Put in the Central U.S.

The central part of the country will continue to swelter under a persistent heat dome. Heat indices could soar between 105 to 110 degrees, making for uncomfortable conditions across the Central/Southern Plains and Mississippi Valley. Stay cool and hydrated, especially if you're outside celebrating Labor Day with family and friends.

Cooler Days for the East and West

The East Coast will enjoy cooler weather as high temperatures stay in the mid-70s to low-80s, with morning lows dipping into the 40s and 50s in New England. A refreshing taste of fall is on the way! Some high elevations in Northern California and the Sierra Nevada could even see freezing morning temperatures.

Scattered Storms in the Southeast

The Southeast, including Florida, will continue to experience scattered thunderstorms through the next few days as the frontal boundary stalls before reaching the Gulf Coast. Keep an eye on the skies if you have plans outdoors.
