Storms and Heatwave Hit the U.S. Plains and Southeast - 07-11 to 07-13
Updated Sat Jul 11th 2026, 9:01am PDT

Severe weather is making its way from the central and southern Plains to the east-central U.S., bringing thunderstorms and possible flash flooding this weekend. Temperatures are set to soar in the north-central and western U.S., while the Southeast continues to swelter in extreme heat.

On Saturday and Sunday, a frontal boundary stretching from the central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic will slowly drift south. This front, combined with an unusually high amount of moisture, is likely to spark scattered to widespread thunderstorms, particularly affecting the Ozarks and stretching into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. The Weather Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk warning for these areas due to heavy rain and possible severe thunderstorms. Severe weather is expected mostly during the afternoon into the night.

By Sunday, high pressure will move into the Northeast, pushing the front further south through the Mid-Atlantic. Areas from South Carolina to eastern Georgia could see severe thunderstorms, and North Carolina to the southern Appalachians could experience flash flooding due to a low-pressure system. The Southeast will also endure oppressive heat, with heat index values reaching 105 to over 110 degrees. Relief is expected Sunday with clouds and rain cooling down the Carolinas, but Florida will remain steamy.

Meanwhile, the Intermountain West and northern Plains will face extreme heat, with triple-digit temperatures expected. Sunday is forecasted to be hotter, especially in central and eastern Montana and North Dakota, with temperatures ranging from 100 to 110 degrees, which is 15 to 25 degrees above the seasonal average. Notable records, such as 107 degrees in Salt Lake City, UT, and 108 degrees in Billings, MT, could be broken. A cold front will bring some relief from the Pacific Northwest into Montana by late Sunday into Monday, although the heat will shift to the northern Plains. Watch for monsoonal thunderstorms in southern Arizona and New Mexico, likely early Monday in northern California.
