Thunderstorms and Mixed Weather Impact US Roads
Updated Thu May 14th 2026, 4:36am PDT

As we move into mid-May, drivers should be aware of potential severe weather affecting roads across the Central Plains, Middle Mississippi Valley, Northeast, and the Pacific Northwest. Thunderstorms may disrupt travel on major highways, with a risk of lightning and heavy winds. Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest might see mixed rain and snow, affecting mountain passes. It's essential to plan ahead and allow extra travel time, especially on days with expected severe weather conditions.

Central Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley

Thursday and Friday are likely to bring severe thunderstorms across the Central Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley. Expect possible disruptions on Interstate 70 and Interstate 80, as well as Highway 20 and Highway 50. These areas could see heavy rain, lightning, strong winds, and even tornado activity, so caution is advised. Plan for potential delays, especially during peak commuting hours.

Northeast

The Northeast will experience rain and embedded thunderstorms through Friday morning, impacting roads such as Interstate 95 and Interstate 90. Commuters should be prepared for slick conditions and reduced visibility. By Friday afternoon, conditions should improve as the storm system moves out to the Atlantic.

Florida

Showers and thunderstorms will continue to affect Florida through Saturday, making travel potentially hazardous on Interstate 4 and Interstate 75. Drivers should watch out for sudden downpours and reduced visibility.

Pacific Northwest

The Pacific Northwest will see mixed precipitation through Saturday, impacting routes like Interstate 5 and Highway 2 in mountainous areas. Rain will be prevalent at lower elevations, while higher elevations could experience snow. If traveling through mountain passes, be prepared for winter driving conditions.
