Current National Weather
Over the next couple of days, a frigid air mass is sweeping across most of the U.S., bringing chilly temperatures way below normal for this time of year. As the cold air streams south, we're looking at potential record-breaking temperatures in the Southeast, especially in Florida. Watch out for freeze warnings stretching from the Lower Mississippi Valley to the Virginia Tidewater through Tuesday morning.
In the Northern parts, from the Great Lakes to interior New England and along the west slopes of the Appalachians, expect very cold, snowy, and windy conditions. The Ohio Valley and Upper Midwest will see a closed upper low, a type of weather system causing the cold air to move into the Northeast and beyond. Meanwhile, snowfall in areas near the Great Lakes and the Appalachians could add up to 4-8 inches by Wednesday morning. Lake effect snow warnings are out for locations downwind of Lake Erie, so get those shovels ready!
As if that wasn't enough, a strong pressure difference across the Mississippi Valley, Midwest, and Southeast is stirring up gusty winds, making conditions dry and elevating the risk for fires. Red flag warnings are in place for today and parts of the Southern Plains on Tuesday, so let's be cautious out there!
And, starting Wednesday, our friends out West will see an upper low-pressure system moving in, which means some unsettled weather. Stay tuned for updates on what that might bring.
