Abnormally dry fuel conditions further exacerbated by high temperatures reaching well into the 90s inland, low relative humidity (lowest away from the immediate coast), and strengthening southwest winds gusting to 15-20mph in the afternoon will lead to increased fire danger. Fire fuels could easily ignite and spread rapidly in these conditions. Residents and visitors to the area are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks, and keep vehicles off dry leaves and grass. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn. If you do, you are advised to use extreme caution.

* WHAT...Dangerous rip currents and strong longshore currents in the surf zone. * WHERE...The beaches from Cape Hatteras to Cape Lookout, and Onslow County beaches. * WHEN...From 8 AM EDT this morning through this evening. * IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Strong longshore currents will create dangerous swimming conditions. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The most likely time for strong rip currents to occur is a couple hours either side of low tide, which will occur around 7:00 AM Sunday.

Dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. People in this area are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Dry, hot, and breezy conditions are expected today. The ongoing drought has led to abnormally dry dead surface fuels across the region. Min RH values of 25 to 35%, wind gusts to around 20 mph, and afternoon high temperatures in the low to mid 90s ahead of a cold front will lead to increased fire danger from mid morning through early evening today. Residents are urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source...including machinery... cigarettes...and matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly.

There is also a Moderate Risk of rip currents expected. * WHERE...Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover Counties. * WHEN...Through this evening. * IMPACTS...Longshore currents can sweep swimmers and surfers into rip currents, piers, jetties, and other hazardous areas. It may sweep swimmers off their feet, making it difficult to return to shore.

The combination of extremely dry fine fuels as per state fire officials, combined with low relative humidity and gusty southwest winds, will lead to an enhanced fire danger Sunday afternoon, especially away from the immediate coast. Relative humidity values are expected to fall into the low and mid 30s away from the coast with southwest winds gusting 15 to 20 mph.
