Current National Weather
Severe weather and heat are dominating the forecast for the next few days. Expect serious thunderstorms, heavy rain, and flash flooding from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic today, and on Tuesday across the north-central U.S. The South and Southeast will continue to sizzle under a persistent heatwave, which will also extend into the Southwest early this week.
Rain and Storms on Monday
Today, look out for intense thunderstorms and heavy rain stretching from the Upper Ohio Valley to the Central Appalachians. These storms could become severe, especially from eastern Tennessee to western North Carolina. This will be the last day of unsettled weather for this area as a cold front will soon clear the storms off the East Coast.
Weather Changes on Tuesday
On Tuesday, the arrival of cooler, drier air will reduce rain to scattered showers along the central to southern Appalachians. However, in New England, expect showers and some thunderstorms as a new low-pressure system forms over the Gulf of Maine before leaving for the Canadian Maritimes by Wednesday morning.
Thunderstorms in the Northern Plains
Tuesday also brings a new round of severe weather to the north-central U.S. as a cold front descends from Canada. Strong to severe thunderstorms are likely, with some areas facing a slight risk of flash flooding. By Wednesday morning, this front will deliver cooler air to the upper Midwest, dropping temperatures into the 40s near the Canadian border.
Heatwave Continues in the South and Southeast
The South and Southeast will endure more sweltering days with temperatures soaring into the upper 90s and low 100s, along with heat indices reaching up to 115 degrees. Residents should stay safe by limiting outdoor activities and staying hydrated. Meanwhile, heat will begin rising again in the Southwest on Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures climbing back into the 100s and 110s.
Extreme Heat Watches and Warnings are in place for southern Nevada, northwest Arizona, and southeast California, while heat advisories cover portions of southern California.
