Dry and windy conditions are expected this afternoon from the from the mountains to the Blue Ridge foothills...including the New River, Roanoke, and Shenandoah Valleys. Relative humidity values are expected to drop under 30 percent associated with strong northwest winds of around 15 to 25 mph, with gusts of 30 to 50 mph. This will result in the continued rapid drying of leaf litter and other forest fuels. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution if handling open flames or equipment that creates sparks. Also, dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and other flammable items in appropriate containers. Keep vehicles off of dry grass and obey local burn bans. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. For more information about wildfire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and education, please visit your state's forestry or environmental protection website.

A combination of dry vegetation, relative humidity lowering into the upper 20s, and winds gusting between 15 to 20 mph will increase the danger of fire start and spread this afternoon and evening. Please exercise caution if handling open flames or equipment that creates sparks. Dispose of cigarette buttes, matches, and other flammable materials in appropriate containers. Keep vehicles off of dry grass and obey local burn bans. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Virginia law prohibits burning in the spring from midnight to 4 PM...February 15th through April 30th. Evening burning is highly discouraged at this time due to the risk of holdover embers heading into today.

Afternoon relative humidity values are expected to drop below 30 percent across much of eastern Tennessee and southwest Virginia this afternoon. This will coincide with another afternoon of gusty winds of 20 to 30 mph in northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. As such, fire danger levels will be elevated through early evening. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities whether you may burn outdoors. If you do burn outside, use extreme caution.
