Special Weather Statement

Special Weather Statement issued May 7 at 2:19PM MDT by NWS Albuquerque NM

Temperatures may briefly drop 32 degrees Wednesday morning in the Northwest Plateau, including Farmington and Shiprock. Locations closer to the San Juan river and other nearby river valleys will have a greater chance of dropping below freezing. A Freeze Warning may be issued for Thursday morning when temperatures may drop below freezing for up to 3 hours. Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above- ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

All of northern and central New Mexico is expected to observe these critical conditions today, but the strongest winds will be focused over and near the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The lowest humidity will be found in central to eastern areas of the state where readings of less than 10 percent will persist for several hours. Critical conditions are forecast to redevelop tomorrow afternoon east of the central mountain chain. The lowest humidity and strongest winds will focus over the Northeast Highlands and Northeast Plains. Rio Chama Below Abiquiu Dam affecting Rio Arriba County. .Snow melt and increased reservoir releases will cause the river flows to become high. Expect minor flooding downstream from the dam. * WHAT...Flooding caused by snowmelt continues. * WHERE...Rio Chama Below Abiquiu Dam. * WHEN...Until further notice. * IMPACTS...At 4.8 feet, Bankfull Stage. Approximately 1460 cfs. Houses near Highway 84 along river will see water begin to encroach their yards. Cattle that cross the river at lower flows may be trapped on one side or the other.
