At 830 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Jesup to near Shellsburg to near Marengo. Movement was east at 40 mph. These storms have a history of producing 40 to 50 mph gusts through central Iowa, including 47 mph at Waterloo and 46 mph near Vinton. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 50 mph and pea size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Strong winds could break small tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible. Locations impacted include... Cedar Rapids, Manchester, Marion, North Liberty, Hiawatha, Mount Vernon, Robins, Center Point, Lisbon, Fairfax, Solon, Ely, Walford, Central City, Springville, Palo, Swisher, Edgewood, Winthrop, and Oxford. As showers continue to move across the area, brief gusty winds up to and in excess of 40 mph may be experienced. Strongest wind reports this evening have been in excess of 50 mph and have caused tree damage. These are being driven by evaporative cooling as rain falls through very dry air below it. These wind gusts are likely to continue until shower activity begins to subside later this evening.
