Flood Watch

Flood Watch issued May 9 at 7:09PM AKDT until May 10 at 6:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK

* WHAT...Flooding caused by an ice jam is possible. * WHERE...The Yukon River near Circle * WHEN...Through Friday afternoon. * IMPACTS...Residents of Circle should be aware that the breakup front on the Yukon river is approaching and expected to reach Circle in the near future. No overbank flooding has been reported yet. However, as the breakup front moves downstream towards Circle it is likely that small jams will form and release, leading to rapidly changing water levels with the potential for minor or moderate flooding at Circle. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - The ice jam that formed 12 miles up stream from Circle remains in place. This ice jam remains firmly entrenched, however the ice is showing signs of rot and weakening. While this is delaying the arrival of the break up front, it is also allowing the flood threat to diminish as some of the built up water is passing the jam location. This jam may continue to stay in place for the next few days. Also, downstream of Circle small sloughs and streams are clearing of ice, and the main channel of the Yukon is beginning to break up in place. This further reduces the flood threat for areas downstream of Circle at least as far as Beaver. Even with a reduced flood threat, people living along the Yukon River should remain vigilant until the ice jam threat passes. - Http://www.weather.gov/aprfc
