Special Weather Statement

Special Weather Statement issued March 20 at 6:33AM EDT by NWS Raleigh NC

Unseasonably warm, windy, and dry conditions will lead to increased fire danger today ahead of a cold front. Southwesterly winds will strengthen to between 15 and 20 mph and become gusty to between 30 and 40 mph from late morning through the afternoon. Additionally, warming temperatures through the 70s, to near 80 degrees, along with residually dry air, will cause relative humidity values to decrease to around 30 percent. The passage of a cold front, and accompanying band of wetting showers and storms and increasing relative humidity values, will cause the risk of increased fire danger to diminish late this afternoon through evening. Outdoor burning should be postponed if possible. If you must burn, use extreme caution since fires can grow quickly and become dangerous in these conditions. Ensure that fire suppression equipment is readily available. Properly extinguish and dispose of any smoking materials.

Special Weather Statement

Special Weather Statement issued March 20 at 6:06AM EDT by NWS Newport/Morehead City NC

The combination of persistent dry conditions, increasing winds, and warm temperatures will lead to an increased fire danger threat for western portions of eastern North Carolina today. Afternoon relative humidity values between 30 and 35 percent, combined with southwesterly winds that will increase to between 15 and 25 mph with occasional gusts to 30 mph this afternoon, will result in increased fire danger across the western half of of eastern North Carolina. Outdoor burning is discouraged. Please refer to your local burn permitting authority on whether you can burn. If you must burn, use extreme caution and ensure fire suppression equipment is readily available.

Special Weather Statement

Special Weather Statement issued March 20 at 4:16AM EDT by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC

A cold front will allow gusty winds to develop today, ranging from 25 to 35 mph. Although scattered rain showers are expected to track across western North Carolina later this morning, this will not be enough of a wetting rain to bring relief to dry fuels. Relative humidity will fall below 30% for a few hours later today as drier air filters into the region behind the cold front. Dry fuels, gusty winds, and low relative humidity will all lead to increased Fire Danger today. Thus, a Fire Danger Statement has been issued for the North Carolina Foothills and Piedmont from 4 PM to 8 PM this evening. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities whether you may burn outdoors. If you do burn outside, use extreme caution.
