Residents are urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source...including machinery... cigarettes...and matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly.

After coordination with local land managers, a Fire Danger Statement has been issued for the Foothills and Piedmont of North Carolina, as well as Virginia counties along and east of the Blue Ridge, and parts of the southern Shenandoah Valley. In these affected areas, gusty winds will coincide with low humidity and dry fuels. Fires will have an easier time starting and spreading. Refer to your local burn-permitting authority on whether you may burn today. If you do burn, exercise extreme caution.

In coordination with NC Forest Service, an Increased Fire Danger Statement has been issued for Tuesday for much of central North Carolina, including the northern Piedmont, Coastal Plain and most of the Sandhills. In the affected areas, southwesterly wind gusts ranging from 20-25 mph will coincide with low relative humidity of 20 to 30 percent and dry fuels to create elevated fire weather conditions. The combination of dry fuels, low relative humidity, and gusty winds will lead to increased fire danger today. Relative humidity values will drop to 20 to 30 percent, accompanied by southwest winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 25 mph.

The combination of west to northwest winds gusting 25 to 30 mph and low relative humidities will continue an elevated fire risk until early this evening. Fire danger will diminish tonight as relative humidities increase and winds decrease. There will be an elevated fire risk again on Tuesday afternoon as conditions are expected to be similar to today, but with slightly lower relative humidities. Winds Tuesday afternoon will be predominantly out of the southwest and may gust up to 20 to 25 mph. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn today and Tuesday. Use caution when burning as fires may get out of hand quickly in these conditions.
