This is done to help with preparing for severe weather that may overlap or be heading towards Mastic Beach.

Lake Effect Snow Warning

Lake Effect Snow Warning issued January 13 at 9:52PM EST until January 15 at 1:00PM EST by NWS Buffalo NY

* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow. Total snow accumulations 1 to 2 feet in the most persistent lake snows, with localized totals of around 3 feet on the Tug Hill Plateau. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph will also produce areas of blowing and drifting snow. * WHERE...The Eastern Lake Ontario Region. The greatest accumulations will focus on the Tug Hill region of southern Jefferson, northern Oswego, and western Lewis counties. * WHEN...Until 1 PM EST Wednesday. The heaviest snowfall rates and greatest impact to travel will be late tonight through Tuesday evening. * IMPACTS...Travel will be very difficult with very poor visibility and deep snow cover on roads. The hazardous conditions will impact the Monday evening and Tuesday morning and evening commutes.

* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow. Total snow accumulations 10 to 20 inches in the most persistent lake snows. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph will also produce areas of blowing and drifting snow. * WHERE...Greatest accumulations across western Wyoming, western Chautauqua, far northwest Cattaraugus, and Southern Erie Counties. * WHEN...Until 4 AM EST Thursday. * IMPACTS...Travel will be very difficult with very poor visibility and deep snow cover on roads. The hazardous conditions will impact the Monday evening and Tuesday morning and evening commutes.

Total snow accumulations between 2 and 6 inches. * WHERE...Portions of northern New York and northern Vermont. * WHEN...From 4 PM Tuesday to 4 PM EST Wednesday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The snow will be elevation dependent, with some lower totals in the valleys and higher totals in the higher terrain.
