Special Weather Statement

Special Weather Statement issued March 19 at 4:31AM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA

After coordination with local land managers, a Fire Danger Statement has been issued for counties within southeast West Virginia, southwest Virginia and northwest North Carolina. The combination of dry fuels, afternoon relative humidity below 30 percent, and winds gusting at times 25 mph to locally 40 mph will increase the danger of any fires quickly spreading out of control. Please exercise extreme caution if handling open flames or equipment that creates sparks. Dispose of cigarette buttes, matches, and other flammable materials in appropriate containers. Keep vehicles off of dry grass and obey local burn bans. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. Refer to your local burn-permitting authority on whether you may burn today.
