Beach Hazards Statement issued July 11 at 1:39PM PDT until July 14 at 11:00PM PDT by NWS San Diego CA

* WHAT...Minor coastal flooding due to high astronomical tides of 7 to 7.5 feet and surf to 3 to 5 feet. * WHERE...San Diego County coastal areas and Orange County coastal areas. * WHEN...From late Sunday morning through Tuesday evening. * IMPACTS...Areas of flooding from tidal overflow in low lying areas, boardwalks, beach parking lots, and beach adjacent streets. Beach erosion. Highest impacts expected during high tides in the evening. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A 3 foot south swell (from 190 degrees) at 13-15 seconds will lead to surf 3-5 feet at south-facing beaches. Elsewhere, surf of 2-4 feet is expected.

* WHAT...Dangerous rip currents and breaking waves due to elevated surf expected. Potential thunderstorms could produce dangerous lightning. * WHERE...San Luis Obispo County Beaches, Santa Barbara County Central Coast Beaches, Santa Barbara County Southwestern Coast, Santa Barbara County Southeastern Coast, Ventura County Beaches, Malibu Coast and Los Angeles County Beaches. * WHEN...From Sunday morning through Wednesday evening. * IMPACTS...There is an increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats nearshore. Lightning strikes can harm individuals that are struck. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A south to southwest swell will affect the coastal waters through the week. With the longer period swell, the potential for larger surf and a greater risk for rip currents will be likely. High tides are expected to continue through this weekend with Monday being the peak of 7.0 to 7.6 ft above MLLW. With the high tides and south swell, there is the potential for some minor coastal flooding in low lying areas. Another concern will be the potential for lightning starting Sunday with a 10-20% of thunderstorms possible.

* WHAT...Up to 1.7 ft of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. * WHERE...Pacific Coast including Monterey Bay. * WHEN...From 8 PM Saturday to 4 AM PDT Wednesday. * IMPACTS...Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated road closures expected. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...At the San Francisco tidal gauge, high tide is expected to be 1.6 ft above normal (7.4 ft MLLW) at 9:11 PM 7/11, 1.7 ft above normal (7.5 ft MLLW) at 10:06 PM 7/12, 1.7 ft above normal (7.5 ft MLLW) at 11:01 PM 7/13, 1.6 ft above normal (7.4 ft MLLW) at 11:55 PM 7/14. These predictions include both astronomical tides and roughly 3-6 inches of additional water mainly from a combination of thermal expansion and accumulated sea level rise since the tidal datum was established (1983-2001).
