The combination of low relative humidity values in the 20 to 30 percent range, dry fuels, and gusty southwest winds will continue to dry out fuels. This will result in an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires through this evening. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. Any dry grasses and tree litter that ignite will have the potential to spread quickly. Virginia residents are reminded that open burning is prohibited before 4 PM EDT each day through April 30th. A statewide burn ban is also in effect for North Carolina.

Relative humidity values will fall into the 20 to 25 percent range this afternoon, with winds increasing to around 10 to 15 mph with some higher gusts. With vegetation remaining dry, the ongoing drought, and favorable meteorological conditions, fires will be able to catch and spread rapidly. A statewide burn ban remains in effect across North Carolina until further notice.

In addition, this statement also includes Northampton County, North Carolina. Residents are urged to exercise caution handling any potential ignition source, including machinery, cigarettes, and matches. Be sure to properly discard all smoking materials. * WHAT...Dangerous rip currents. * WHERE...The beaches from Cape Hatteras to Cape Lookout. * WHEN...From 8 AM EDT this morning through this evening. * IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The most likely time for strong rip currents to occur is a couple hours either side of low tide, which will occur around 12:30 PM Wednesday.
