Traffic Alert: Frosty Roads and Coastal Concerns from 10-17 to 10-19
Updated Sat Oct 17th 2026, 10:11am PDT
Central, Southern, and Eastern U.S.
As we head into the weekend, expect much chillier conditions with widespread frost and freezing temperatures from the Plains to the East Coast. Folks traveling along Interstate 70 through Missouri and Illinois or Interstate 80 in the Midwest should keep an eye out for frosty patches, especially early in the mornings. On Sunday, the cold air will persist, so keep those layers handy and drive safely.
Mid-Atlantic and Carolina Coast
This weekend, a Nor'easter is developing off the Carolina coast, bringing potential coastal flooding and beach erosion to areas along the Mid-Atlantic coast. Expect heavy rain and gusty winds along the Interstate 95 corridor from Richmond, VA to Wilmington, DE. Be cautious if traveling along US Route 13 and coastal roads as well. Conditions will linger into early next week.
Southeast and Florida
The trailing cold front will move through Florida bringing showers and thunderstorms through early Sunday. Areas along Interstate 95 and US Route 1 could see localized flooding, particularly along the southeastern Florida coast. Be mindful of wet conditions through the weekend.
California
California is on alert for elevated fire weather conditions due to strong winds, especially in areas like the Interstate 5 corridor from Los Angeles, CA to Redding, CA. The Santa Ana winds will continue through Sunday, affecting travel in foothill and valley regions. Avoid activities that could spark a fire and drive with caution.
Pacific Northwest
In the Pacific Northwest, light showers are expected, particularly in coastal areas and the northern Cascades. Travelers along Interstate 5 from Seattle, WA to Portland, OR should watch for wet roads and adjust travel times accordingly.
