Severe Weather and Snow Impact Roads; Heatwave Looms Ahead - 05-18 to 05-20
Updated Mon May 18th 2026, 6:00am PDT
Stay safe on the roads this week as severe weather brings challenges for our commutes. Expect heavy storms and potential flash flooding in the east-central and southern Plains, impacting travel through major routes. Meanwhile, travel across the higher elevations of Wyoming and the Rockies might be slowed by heavy snow. An early heatwave is setting near-record temperatures in the eastern U.S., which could affect those traveling long distances.
Midwest and Great Plains
Travelers on I-70, I-35, and I-80 should anticipate severe weather and potential flash flooding through Tuesday. Heavy thunderstorms are expected from eastern Kansas to southeastern Nebraska, extending towards the central Plains and upper Midwest. Drivers are advised to exercise caution as there could be flying debris and standing water on roads.
Southern Plains and High Plains
Severe thunderstorms are predicted across eastern Texas into the lower Mississippi Valley from Tuesday into Wednesday. Roads such as I-10 and I-20 may be impacted by heavy rain and strong winds. Additionally, extreme fire weather warnings are in effect for areas along I-25; avoid unnecessary travel and keep alert for possible road closures or detours.
Rocky Mountains
Travelers in higher elevations of Wyoming, Front Range, and Wasatch along I-80 and I-25 should prepare for heavy snow with reduced visibility and potentially icy conditions. Snowfall is expected to taper off by tonight, but roads may remain slick.
Eastern U.S. and New England
An early-season heatwave will affect routes across the east with temperatures nearing triple digits. Drivers on I-95 and I-81 should anticipate potential vehicle overheating or tire blowouts; ensure vehicles are in good condition. The heat will extend from the Mid-Atlantic into New England by Tuesday, so plan accordingly for long-distance travel.
