Road Watch: Thunderstorms and Heat Impact - 09-08 to 09-10
Updated Tue Sep 8th 2026, 4:34am PDT
As storms and heat make their rounds, travelers should prepare for potential road impacts. Strong thunderstorms will sweep across the Midwest and into New England, potentially causing delays. Meanwhile, the midsection of the country will experience a much-needed break from the heat by Wednesday. Expect monsoonal showers in Arizona and New Mexico. Stay tuned for updates as conditions evolve.
Midwest to New England Storms
Starting today, expect strong to severe thunderstorms moving southeastward across the Midwest, affecting major routes like Interstate 80, Interstate 35, and Interstate 90. These storms will continue through Wednesday night, reaching into interior New England. Those traveling along Interstate 95 through New England should prepare for potential heavy rainfall and possible road closures.
Heat Relief in the Midsection
For those in the midsection of the country, relief from the oppressive heat is on its way by late Wednesday. While the heat subsides, travelers on Interstate 70 and Interstate 55 should still be cautious, as temperatures may still reach dangerous highs today into Wednesday, particularly through the mid-Mississippi Valley.
Southern Showers
The eastern Gulf Coast, including Florida, will see scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the next few days. Those traveling on Interstate 75 and Interstate 10 should expect wet roads and reduced visibility, which could lead to slower travel times.
Western Monsoonal Showers
Monsoonal showers are predicted to impact Arizona, New Mexico, and possibly interior California by Wednesday. Watch for flash flooding risks along routes like Interstate 40 and Interstate 15, and adjust travel plans accordingly.
