Flood Advisory

Flood Advisory issued May 8 at 5:05PM EDT until May 8 at 8:30PM EDT by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC

* WHAT...A threat for nuisance flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues. * WHERE...A portion of western North Carolina, including the following counties, Buncombe, Henderson, McDowell and Rutherford. * WHEN...Until 830 PM EDT. * IMPACTS...Nuisance flooding of low-lying areas adjacent to streams and other poor-drainage areas, including farmland, parks, greenways, boat-access areas, golf courses, underpasses, and parking lots. Isolated, shallow flows over roadways is possible. A few flood-prone, low-water crossings may become impassible. A small culvert washout or two is possible. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 456 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rainfall has ended across the Advisory area. Between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain has fallen, most of which occurred in less than 90 minutes. This did cause excessive runoff across the Advisory area from Grassy Creek, Reedypatch Creek and the Rocky Broad River in Hickory Nut Gorge, to Nebo, Thermal City, and Dysartsville in the headwaters of the Second Broad River and Cove Creek. Nuisance flooding is still possible in the Advisory area, impacting area streams with rapid rises and out-of-bank conditions, causing flooding of adjacent low-lying areas. People near streams should seek higher ground in case rapid rises overwhelm adjacent low-lying areas. Area streamgauges indicate the Rocky Broad River near Bat Cave has crested, but Cove Creek further downstream continues to rise rapidly. It will take another 1-3 hours for area streams to crest. Therefore, the Flood Advisory will remain in effect to allow the nuisance flood threat to end. - No additional rainfall is expected this evening. Therefore, the threat for more significant flash flooding has ended. Please avoid area streams until it is clear waters have receded and avoid any flooded or barricaded roadways. - Some locations that may continue to experience flooding include... Fairview In Buncombe County, Lake Lure, Chimney Rock Village, Chimney Rock State Park, Bat Cave, Shingle Hollow, Green Hill, Sugar Hill, Thermal City, Union Mills, Fero, Glenwood, Gerton, Edneyville, Dysartsville and Sunshine. - Http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood
