SAFETY and DATA MESSAGE

Do not drive vehicles through flooded areas. The water depth or fast flowing water/mud/debris from a flash flood will make road conditions unsafe. Do not rely soley on data presented here or other third-party websites - always check your official national and local weather service agency website, socials, radio and/or TV stations for making critical decisions related to weather events.

Please carefully read each posted Warning and Alert as it relates to the area(s) being affected. We may provide a wider range of issued severe weather warnings for surrounding cities and counties, so some alerts may not directly impact this location. This is done to help with preparing for severe weather that may overlap or be heading towards Anchorage.

Hydrologic Outlook

Area
Municipality of Skagway; Haines Borough and Klukwan
Hydrologic Outlook issued June 17 at 3:04PM AKDT by NWS Juneau AK

ESFAJK Northern Lynn Canal region will be warming into the 70s by the weekend, while snow levels rise to 7000 feet or higher. This will increase the amount of snowmelt running into the streams and rivers. This will raise the water levels in them, and in some case could bring the levels to bankfull or beyond that. In particular, the Chilkat River will be watched closely. The Taiya and Skagway rivers should be anticipated to see increases as well, but at the time are approaching bankfull.

Flood Watch

Area
Central Beaufort Sea Coast; Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast; Western Arctic Plains; Central Arctic Plains; Central Brooks Range; Romanzof Mountains
Flood Watch issued June 17 at 2:08PM AKDT until June 18 at 4:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK

* WHAT...Flooding caused by snowmelt continues to be possible. * WHERE...Rivers and creeks draining the Brooks Range including areas around Atigun Pass, Galbraith Lake, and The Dalton Highway from Mp 232 To Mp 356, the Central Arctic Plains, Central Beaufort Sea Coast, Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast, and Western Arctic Plains. * WHEN...Through Wednesday afternoon. * IMPACTS...Rapid snowmelt and ice jams could lead to flooding of rivers and streams across the North Slope. Access to roads, airstrips, and low-lying infrastructure may be affected. High flows could lead to bank erosion that could threaten nearby roads. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Rivers are continuing to breakup across the North Slope. River levels are beginning to crest and gradually dropping along the middle parts of the Sag, Kuparuk and Colville Rivers. On the Sag, there has been an emergency closure of the Dalton Highway between MP 305 and MP 356 due to a major washout at MP 315 caused by a failed culvert as well as water over-topped the road at several other spots. On the Colville, flooding is occurring at Umiat with ice jams present farther downstream. Flooding could occur downstream over the next couple of days as these ice jams release. - Http://www.weather.gov/aprfc

Flood Warning

Area
Central Beaufort Sea Coast; Western Arctic Plains; Central Arctic Plains
Flood Warning issued June 17 at 1:58PM AKDT until June 20 at 4:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK

* WHAT...Flooding caused by snowmelt continues. * WHERE...Colville near Umiat To The Mouth Of The River. * WHEN...Until 400 PM AKDT Friday. * IMPACTS...High water from rapid snow melt and recent ice jams is leading to significant flooding along the Colville River. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 158 PM AKDT, Monday morning, water levels at the USGS Colville River gage at Umiat were at 62.94 ft and still rising. This is the highest on record by over 3 ft since the gage was established in 2003. Water has now inundated portions of the Umiat airstrip and is encroaching on structures in the camp. High water extends downstream to the Colville River Delta where several ice jams have formed over the previous 24-hrs, leading to flooding of the eastern floodplain. Once these ice jams release, communities and infrastructure downstream should prepare for and expect high water and flooding over the next couple of days. Water levels are expected to continue to slowly rise and level off through the end of the week as additional high elevation snow melt is expected to make its way downstream. - Http://www.weather.gov/aprfc

Flood Warning

Area
Central Beaufort Sea Coast
Flood Warning issued June 17 at 1:57PM AKDT until June 20 at 4:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK

* WHAT...Flooding caused by snowmelt is occurring. * WHERE...Kuparuk River, Spine Road, Kuparuk River Bridge and all other roads near the River. * WHEN...Until 400 PM AKDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 149 PM AKDT, high water from rapid snowmelt over the past five days has caused rising water levels along the Kuparuk River, resulting in minor flooding near the river's mouth. - Floodwaters have been reported flowing over low-lying crossings on Spine Road, which remains closed to all traffic. - River levels are expected to crest within the next 24 to 48 hours, followed by a gradual decline through the end of the week. Continued impacts to infrastructure near the river's mouth are possible as elevated water levels persist. - Personnel in the area are urged to use caution and avoid flooded roadways. - http://www.weather.gov/aprfc

Flood Advisory

Area
Central Beaufort Sea Coast; Central Arctic Plains; Central Brooks Range
Flood Advisory issued June 17 at 1:46PM AKDT until June 20 at 4:00PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK

* WHAT...Flooding caused by snowmelt is occurring. * WHERE...Sagavanirktok River along the Dalton Highway. * WHEN...Until 400 PM AKDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 138 PM AKDT, high water from rapid snowmelt over the past five days continues to cause erosion and minor flooding along the Sagavanirktok (Sag) River, affecting travel conditions on the Dalton Highway. - Multiple sections of the highway have water near or over the roadway, with a significant washout reported at Milepost (MP) 15. The Dalton Highway remains closed between MP 305 and MP 356. The USGS river gauge at MP 325 has likely reached its peak and is now slowly receding. However, water levels are expected to remain above flood stage through Thursday. - High water will continue to move downstream over the coming days. Infrastructure near the river's mouth, including roads and bridges near the Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay area is already being impacted. Water levels in this area are expected to gradually rise, particularly around high tide. - Motorists and local authorities are advised to monitor conditions closely and avoid flooded areas. - http://www.weather.gov/aprfc
