Dense smoke is being pulled by a quasi- stationary front across southern Minnesota. While the front has stalled smoke has continued to move south along the Mississippi River Valley and may continue to do so today. There will be a sharp gradient of smoke, with some areas of the same counties experiencing Good/Green air quality while other experience Red/Unhealthy for All conditions as the front slowly moves south. Conditions will gradually improve by Friday morning as the front retreats northward.

Prolonged heat waves lead to cumulative heat stress for those who cannot adequately cool down and recover each night. High temperatures will be in the 90s across the alert area Tuesday, and the combination of wildfire smoke and extreme heat amplifies health risks. Heavy smoke may move further south into Minnesota Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, so the air quality alert may need to be expanded. Additional rounds of heavy smoke are possible across the region through at least Thursday morning.
