Wet Weather Hits California & Southwest, East Coast Calms Down 10-22 to 10-24
Updated Thu Oct 22nd 2026, 6:45am PDT

California and the Southwest are experiencing strong rain and storm impacts. Subtropical Storm Josephine is moving away from the East Coast, calming weather there. Expect stormy skies across California and the Four Corners region, with heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding. Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest prepares for snowfall in the mountains.

East Coast Calms Down

Subtropical Storm Josephine is heading away from the East Coast into the Western Atlantic today. While the coast of Massachusetts may see gusty winds up to 50 mph by the ocean, inland gusts will be around 20-45 mph. Watch out for potential beach erosion due to high waves. Conditions are improving for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Coast as the storm moves further out.

Heavy Rain and Storms in the West

A strong weather system is moving into the Western U.S., bringing tropical moisture across California, the Great Basin, and the Four Corners. Expect heavy rain especially in the south-facing mountains of the Four Corners region. There's potential for flash flooding in places like dry washes and burn scars, especially across southern Utah and southwestern Colorado today. Rainfall may continue into Friday and Saturday in the Southern/Central High Plains.

The Southwest might see severe thunderstorms, particularly in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, with chances of hail and strong winds. The cold air from the storm will bring snow to the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains and parts of the Intermountain West and Colorado Rockies today, spreading to the Northern Rockies by Friday.

Temperature Changes

The West will be cooler due to the stormy weather, while an upper-level ridge will bring warmer temperatures to the Northern/Central Plains and Upper Midwest. In the East, clear skies will lead to cooler temperatures, with potential frosty mornings.

Florida Showers

A weather system will bring showers and thunderstorms to southern Florida over the next few days, with some heavy rain possible by the weekend.
