Current National Weather
We're watching a powerful storm system whip up across the Great Plains and continue to bring heavy rain to the east coast of Florida. As this system develops today, folks in the Northern Plains will notice an increase in winds and some showers as it makes its way across the area, marking the start of our work week with some early excitement.
Monday and Tuesday: Great Plains and Midwest
Today and into tomorrow, a low pressure system strengthening in the Central High Plains will stir up gusty winds and thunderstorms. This system is what we call a 'lee-side cyclone,' forming as winds flow over mountains and dip down on the other side. As it travels toward the Northern Plains, expect scattered thunderstorms and possible flash flooding in the Central and Southern Plains. Overnight, the thunderstorm threat moves eastward, reaching the Mississippi Valley and into the Upper Midwest. Severe weather is possible, so stay informed if you're in these areas.
Monday: Florida
Meanwhile, parts of the southern Florida Peninsula are in for more heavy rain today. A big high pressure system sitting off the East Coast is sending moist air onshore, keeping the rain coming. For those in the northeast, this high pressure is bringing dry and pleasant weather.
