Rain and Flash Flooding in Southwest, Showers Move to Plains - 10-12 to 10-14
Updated Mon Oct 12th 2026, 5:20am PDT

Get ready for a wet and stormy start to the week, especially if you're in the Great Basin and Desert Southwest. Today, expect heavy rainfall with possible flash flooding in areas from Utah to Arizona. This is due to a slow-moving cold front mingling with leftover tropical moisture. Also, watch out for snow if you're in the higher peaks of Nevada and Utah. Tomorrow, this wet weather shifts towards the Central and Southern Plains, with showers and thunderstorms likely. Some severe weather might occur from Kansas City, MO to Lubbock, TX, with rainfall possibly reaching 2 to 3 inches from western Missouri to the Texas Big Bend on Wednesday. Over in the Northern Tier, expect showers and possible snow in northern Maine. Temperatures will vary significantly across the U.S., with much warmer weather in the Central and Eastern areas, while the West stays chilly under the storm system. By mid-week, a drop in temperatures will affect the Northern Plains, Upper Midwest, and New England as a cold front heads south.

Great Basin and Southwest

Today, we're seeing heavy downpours in the Great Basin and Desert Southwest due to tropical moisture mixing with a cold front. There could be flash flooding in parts of Utah and Arizona, particularly in areas that have already been soaked recently. Snow is expected at higher elevations in Nevada and Utah because of the cold air coming from the northwest with the upper-low system.

Central and Southern Plains

On Tuesday, the focus will shift towards the Central and Southern Plains. Expect more showers and thunderstorms as moisture meets a cold front and dryline. Severe storms could develop from Kansas City, MO to Lubbock, TX, so stay alert. By Wednesday, heavy rain, up to 2-3 inches, is possible from western Missouri down to the Texas Big Bend.

Northern Tier and New England

Starting Tuesday, a new wave of showers and storms will spread from the Upper Midwest to New England. Accumulating snow might occur in northern Maine due to the colder air at higher elevations.

Temperature Changes

Be prepared for a stark temperature difference nationwide. The Central and East will enjoy warmer temps, with highs reaching the 80s and 90s, potentially breaking records. Meanwhile, the West will feel much colder, with highs in the 40s and 50s. As we move through the week, look for cooler temperatures to spread into the Northern Plains and New England as the cold front progresses south.
