October Heatwave Eases in California; Tropical Storm Isaias Brings Heavy Rain to Florida 10-07 to 10-09
Updated Wed Oct 7th 2026, 6:19am PDT

We are keeping our watch on very stubborn fall weather transitions across different parts of the nation for the next few days, as a brewing El Nino is impacting these conditions. California is seeing a significant heatwave, but there's some relief coming by Friday as temperatures start to dip. Meanwhile, in the Gulf Coast, Tropical Storm Isaias is gearing up, bringing heavy rain and possible floods, especially in Florida. The Northeast is experiencing cooler weather, but it'll warm up by Thursday. Here's what to expect in each region:

California's Heatwave

We're experiencing an intense heatwave in California and the Desert Southwest. Temperatures are soaring 15-20 degrees above normal, reaching the 90s and low 100s. Nighttime lows in the mid to upper 70s aren't offering much relief. But don't worry, it's expected to cool off by Friday, starting along the coast and moving inland. If you're out and about, stay cool and hydrated, as Heat Advisories are in effect.

Tropical Storm Isaias in the Gulf

Now, turning our attention to the Gulf Coast, Tropical Storm Isaias is on the move and strengthening. For those in Florida, prepare for thunderstorms and heavy rain, especially from northern to central areas. Expect a few inches of rain daily, with potential for isolated flooding, especially in cities. By Thursday night, rain will begin to shift northward as Isaias tracks in that direction. Keep an eye on local weather updates for the latest on Isaias's path.

Northeast's Cool Spell

In the Northeast, it's cooler than usual, and some areas are under Frost and Freeze Warnings. If you're in New England or Pennsylvania, expect temperatures to perk up by Thursday, reaching into the 70s. A short-lived cool burst will arrive by Friday, but nothing too drastic.

Other Areas

Elsewhere, the rest of the country is mostly dry. Scattered showers may pop up in the central Rockies and Four Corners region, and from the upper Great Lakes to northern New England. By Friday morning, expect showers in the north-central Plains as a new weather system starts up.
