Rainy Days Ahead for the Southwest and Southern Plains 09-29 to 10-01
Updated Wed Sep 29th 2026, 2:52am PDT

This week's weather brings a variety of conditions across the United States. A weakening Nor'easter will bring some rain to Cape Cod, MA, while the Southwest and Southern Plains brace for potentially heavy rain and flash flooding due to tropical moisture from Hurricane Polo. Expect very hot temperatures in Houston, TX and surrounding areas, while severe storms may occur in portions of the Southern Plains.

East Coast

Our Nor'easter situated over Cape Cod, MA is calming down and shifting northeast over the Atlantic. Expect the rain to ease up by late Tuesday morning and the system to move east of Canada by Wednesday.

Southwest and Southern Plains

A lot of tropical moisture from Hurricane Polo is moving into Santa Fe, NM and the Southern Rockies bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms on Tuesday. The risk of too much rain continues into Wednesday hitting parts of the Southern Plains, with a focus on areas like Amarillo, TX. We're expecting widespread rainfall of 3-6 inches, possibly even more in some places. Flash flooding is a significant concern, so keep an eye on streams and rivers, especially in recently burned areas.

Flash floods might hit parts of New Mexico and western Texas on Tuesday, shifting towards the Southern Plains and Central Rockies by Wednesday. Considerable flooding might also affect areas like Omaha, NE into Des Moines, IA with the bulk of the rain on Tuesday and Wednesday. By Thursday, the downpours continue over the Southern Plains with more flash floods expected. Stay safe and avoid flooded roads.

Midwest

A wave of low pressure will bring showers and potential heavy rain to parts of the Northern Plains on Tuesday, extending into the Central Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley through Wednesday morning. Urban areas and roads in Kansas City, MO might see flash floods.

Southern Plains

Watch out for showers and severe thunderstorms on Wednesday. This could affect areas like Dallas, TX and Oklahoma City, OK, bringing lightning, strong winds, and a chance of a tornado or two.

By Thursday, the threat of severe storms decreases but there's still a slight chance for severe weather in the Southern Plains.

Other Areas

Showers and storms will also develop on Thursday over parts of the Great Lakes, the Florida Coast, and the Central/Western Gulf Coast.
