More Flash Flooding Expected in the Southwest and Plains: 09-17 to 09-19
Updated Thu Sep 17th 2026, 5:06am PDT

This week, we're looking at more flash flooding risks in parts of the Southwest, Northern Plains, and Upper Midwest. High temperatures will persist across the South-Central U.S. with possible record highs. Watch out for scattered thunderstorms in Florida, though they won't bring excessive rain. Stay safe and keep updated!

Southwest and Rockies

On Thursday, the focus for heavy rain shifts from the Great Basin to the Southern Rockies. A moisture-rich system will enhance showers and isolated thunderstorms, leading to potential flash flooding. Although fewer storms than yesterday, high rainfall rates make flash floods still a concern.

Northern Plains to Upper Midwest

Expect heavy rain from Friday into Saturday as a new low-pressure system forms over the Central High Plains. This system will bring more flash flooding risks from the Northern Plains to the Upper Midwest. The cold air from Canada will bring cooler temperatures, leading to highs in the 60s and 70s north of the front.

South-Central U.S.

The South-Central U.S. will continue to experience hot temperatures due to a strong upper-level high pressure—a heat dome—causing highs in the 90s and 100s. Heat advisories are in place, and daily record highs might be challenged.

Florida

Expect scattered thunderstorms in Florida due to a stationary front near the heat dome. Heavy downpours are possible, but they won't likely lead to excessive rainfall.
