Gusty northwest winds will develop across southeast Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry today. Relative humidity is expected to drop below 25 percent this afternoon as extremely dry Arctic air arrives in the Carolinas and northeast Georgia. Gusts as high as 25-30 kts will accompany this air mass, resulting in potential for fine dead fuel moisture to drop to critical levels. Although cold temperatures will somewhat limit erratic fire behavior, the risk for quick spread of fires will nonetheless be elevated across the North Carolina Piedmont, the South Carolina Upstate, and northeast Georgia this afternoon. Consult your local burn permitting authority on whether you may burn today. If you do burn, exercise extreme caution.

A cold front moving through the region will bring gusty winds and drier air back into the forecast area today. Wind gusts of between 20-25 mph, and low relative humidity values of between 20-25 percent are expected over central SC and east-central GA. These will combine with dry fuels to bring and increase fire risk today.

Special Weather Statement issued January 15 at 12:01AM EST by NWS Wilmington NC

The combination of dry fuels, low relative humidity, and gusty winds will lead to increased fire danger today. Relative humidity values will drop to 25 to 30 percent, accompanied by northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 25 to 30 mph.
