We may provide a wider range of issued severe weather warnings for surrounding cities and counties, so some alerts may not directly impact this location. This is done to help with preparing for severe weather that may overlap or be heading towards Sampson County.

Flood Advisory

Flood Advisory issued September 13 at 2:50PM EDT until September 13 at 6:00PM EDT by NWS Newport/Morehead City NC

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. * WHERE...A portion of eastern North Carolina, including the following counties, Dare and Hyde. * WHEN...Until 600 PM EDT. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water over roadways. Ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 248 PM EDT, NWS employee reported heavy rain in the advisory area due to thunderstorms. Overflowing poor drainage areas have already caused minor flooding in the advisory area. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. Standing water has been reported in spots along Highway 12 in Hatteras. - Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding. - Some locations that will experience flooding include... Frisco, Buxton, Avon, Hatteras Ferry Terminal, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Avon Pier, Ocracoke Lighthouse and Ocracoke Ferry Terminal. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

* WHAT...Dangerous rip currents and a strong north to south longshore current. * WHERE...Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover Counties. * WHEN...Until 8 PM EDT this evening. * IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

* WHAT...Dangerous rip currents. * WHERE...Eastern Currituck County. * WHEN...Until 8 PM EDT this evening. * IMPACTS...Breaking waves of 3 to 5 ft combined with onshore swell will result in rough surf conditions and a high risk of rip currents. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

* WHAT...Dangerous rip currents. * WHERE...The beaches from Duck to Cape Lookout. * WHEN...Through Friday evening. * IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The most likely time for strong rip currents to occur is a couple hours either side of low tide, which will occur around 9:30 AM Friday.
