At 617 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 6 miles southeast of Thomasville to 9 miles west of Asheboro to 12 miles north of Badin Lake. Movement was southeast at 25 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Locations impacted include... Asheboro, Randleman, North Carolina Zoo, Seagrove, Ramseur, Denton, Franklinville, Ulah, and Martha.

Flash Flood Warning

Flash Flood Warning issued July 20 at 6:11PM EDT until July 20 at 8:00PM EDT by NWS Raleigh NC

At 611 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.2 to 0.5 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing flash flooding. SOURCE...Radar. IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Greensboro, High Point, Kernersville, McLeansville, Gibsonville, Pleasant Garden, Jamestown, Forest Oaks, Lake Jeanette Marina, Climax, Lake Brandt, Lake Townsend, Oak Hollow Marina, Lake Guilford Mackintosh Marina and Colfax. This includes the following flood prone locations... South Buffalo near Holden Rd and I-40.

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. * WHERE...A portion of western North Carolina, including the following county, Transylvania. * WHEN...Until 800 PM EDT. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 547 PM EDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. - Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1 inch are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding. Watch for rapidly rising stream levels in portions of the French Broad Headwaters, especially along the East Fork French Broad and around Rosman. - Some locations that will experience flooding include... Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, RDU International, Morrisville, Parkwood, Jordan Lake, and Research Triangle.

A stationary front near the Virginia, North Carolina, border will be the focus for heavy rainfall through this evening. Showers and thunderstorms containing torrential downpours may cause rapid rises on area streams and creeks. * WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible. * WHERE...Portions of north central North Carolina, including the following counties, Caswell, Rockingham, Stokes and Surry and Virginia, including the following counties, Charlotte, Franklin, Halifax, Henry, Patrick and Pittsylvania. * WHEN...Through this evening. * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Slow-moving showers and thunderstorms will produce periods of heavy rain through this evening. * WHAT...Dangerous rip currents. * WHERE...The beaches from Cape Hatteras to Surf City. * WHEN...From 8 AM EDT this morning through this evening. * IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The most likely time for strong rip currents to occur is a couple hours either side of low tide, which will occur around 1 PM today.
